Terms of use

Last updated: October 12, 2026

Important: FOIAFiler is not a law firm and does not give legal advice. The letters it produces are templates. You are responsible for reviewing, editing and sending your own requests.

1. Acceptance of terms

By using FOIAFiler (“the Service”) you agree to these terms. If you don’t agree, don’t use the Service.

2. What the Service is

FOIAFiler is a free, browser-based tool that helps you draft Freedom of Information Act request letters, administrative appeals and related documents for submission to federal agencies. It generates template letters from the information you provide. It does not submit anything for you.

3. Not legal advice

The Service is not a law firm and does not provide legal advice or create an attorney–client relationship. Generated letters are templates based on common FOIA practice and may not suit every situation. You are responsible for reviewing and editing every letter, for the accuracy of what you provide, and for what you send to an agency. If you need legal advice about a request, denial or lawsuit, consult a qualified attorney.

4. No warranties

The Service is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind. We don’t warrant that the Service will be uninterrupted or error-free, that agency addresses, emails, portal links, deadlines or legal summaries are current or complete, or that any request will succeed. Deadline dates shown by the tool are estimates only.

5. Agency data

FOIAFiler includes agency FOIA office addresses, emails and portal links compiled from public sources and last reviewed September 24, 2026. They change. Always verify current instructions on the agency’s official FOIA page before sending a request.

6. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, FOIAFiler, its operators and contributors are not liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages arising from your use of the Service, including denied or delayed requests, missed deadlines, fees charged by agencies, or reliance on generated content.

7. Your responsibilities

You agree to verify contact details before sending, to review generated letters, to comply with applicable law, and to provide truthful information. First-party requests may require a signed identity statement; signing a false statement under penalty of perjury is a serious matter and is your responsibility.

8. Intellectual property

The FOIAFiler tool, design and code belong to its operators. Letters you generate are yours to use. The statutory language they contain is public.

9. Changes

We may change these terms at any time. Continued use after a change means you accept the new terms. Material changes will be reflected in the date above.

10. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the United States and, where applicable, the state in which the Service’s operators are located. Disputes will be resolved in the courts of competent jurisdiction.
