Your privacy
Last updated: October 12, 2026
Short version: the letter you write is built in your browser and never sent to us. We use Google Analytics to count page visits. If you use the contact form, we receive what you type in it.
What stays in your browser
Everything you enter into the request builder, appeal builder and bundle builder — your name, address, request text, agency choices and the generated letters — is processed on your device. PDFs are built in your browser too. None of it is transmitted to our servers, and it is not saved: when you close or reload the page, it’s gone. FOIAFiler does not write your letter content to cookies or browser storage.
Analytics
We use Google Analytics to understand which pages are visited. It sets cookies and receives your IP address, browser type, the page you viewed and how you got there. It does not receive the contents of your letters. You can block it with a browser setting or content blocker and FOIAFiler will work the same.
The contact form
If you send a message through the contact form, the name, email address and message you type are sent to a form-handling service and stored in a Google spreadsheet we use to read and answer messages. Please don’t put sensitive personal details or the specifics of your FOIA request in it.
Server logs
Our web server automatically logs basic connection information such as IP address, browser type, requested page and referring page. We use it for security monitoring and aggregate traffic statistics.
Fonts and other third parties
Fonts and scripts used by the tool are served from foiafiler.org itself. We don’t run ad networks or social media pixels. Links to agencies and other sites are outside our control — read their privacy policies before submitting anything to them.
Sending your request
FOIAFiler never submits anything for you. Your letter only leaves your device when you choose to send it to the agency yourself, by portal, email or mail. Records requests may be released publicly or become part of the agency’s FOIA logs, so don’t include information you wouldn’t want read by others.
Children
FOIAFiler is a general-purpose tool and isn’t directed at children under 13. We don’t knowingly collect their information.
Changes
If we make material changes to this policy we’ll update the date above.
